The conference was held on October 29-30, 2002 by CRTS jointly with the Department of the Commonwealth of Independent States of the Insititute of Oriental Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences)
with supprot of Open Society Institute (George Soros Foundation, Russia and Friedrich Naumann Stiftung on the base of Volgograd State University and Volgograd Regional Museum of Local Lore.
The conference has continued the series of the measures with common names were held by the Institute of Oriental Studies. For Volgograd Region it was the first significant conference with participation of authoritative specialists in Oriental Studies from Russia and countries of CIS.
In accordance to the general idea of organizers, only relatively small number of participants (6 from Volgograd region, 15 from other regions of Russia, 2 from countries of CIS) were invited. It allowed to avoid subdivision into sections and provide participants by sufficient time for their presentations. The conference concentrated on the following problems:
1. Realities and Stereotypes of Ethno-cultural Inter-perception.
2. Identities and Interaction of Ethno-cultural Groups.
3. Regional Problems: Past and present.
4. International Relations and Transboundary Interaction.
By general admission the conference proved to be sufficiently effective and it has manached to achieve the objectives pursued. The participants pointed to high level of activity of the university students who were not only attentive listeners but also competent participants of discussions.
